Tapatjatjaka Art & Craft Centre - Titjikala Community

Honey Ant Home Honey Ant About Us

Titjikala is a small settlement located about 120 kilometres south of Alice Springs on the edge of the Simpson Desert. It has a population of approximately 250 people, whose primary languages are Arrernte, Luritja and Yankunytjatjara.

The community is also known as Tapatjatjaka and Maryvale and is accessible by a sand-rutted road meandering through red dunes. Should you drive this way, beware of the wild camels, dingoes, donkeys, kangaroos and bullocks that may cross your path.

The Hugh River runs to the south of the town.

Aboriginal people started settling permanently in the area in the 1950's. Families worked at the surrounding stations as stockmen, cameleers and domestic help.

The country surrounding Titjikala is stunningly beautiful. Whilst the environment may appear to be harsh and stark to some, it is home to Indigenous people of the region and has been for over 40,000 years. The red sand hills, desert oaks and surrounding countryside are a major source of inspiration for much of the artwork.

Art and Crafts are produced by the community and marketed through the Tapatjatjaka Art and Craft Centre and Gallery. Work produced includes paintings, batik, wood carving (punu), wire sculptures, bush toys, ceramics, jewellery, t-shirts and fabric.

Visitors and travellers are welcome to visit the Art Gallery between 9.00am - 5.30pm Monday to Thursday, or by appointment on weekends.
